Curt.doc Short Documentary Festival is a unique festival in the Girona region. Within Catalonia, competitions devoted to this genre of film-making are scarce and are usually only inserted as minor categories in larger festivals.
This endows Curt.doc with its uniqueness; it allows documentary film-makers dedicated to this format to exhibit and compete within their own field. The current boom in documentary making has been largely facilitated by digital technology; the field of short documentary film-making is now within the reach of many more people than ever before, which has meant more people can work from home to present their stories and perspectives through this exciting, grass-roots medium.
The lack of events and spaces devoted to this medium and genre of film-making has restricted our encounters with it and limits our knowledge and understanding of innovators in this field.
What is more, the absence of the study of audiovisual language from syllabuses in our country inhibits understanding of such film-making and instead creates unease and promotes criticism of audiovisual productions, of which documentary forms a part and from attacks on which it is not spared.
Such considerations have provided the inspiration for embarking on this ambitious project; to create a new space for exhibition, competition between like-minded creators, and above all to provide a forum in which ideas are encountered and exchanged among directors and lovers of cinema on the local, national and international stage.
